Errmm... Merry Christmas, is it?
Some little monkey said to me this morning, "Mama, I've got something for you. It's a bit late, though, so I hope you don't mind."
She proceeded to hand me a shiny envelope. I opened it and it was a handmade Christmas card that the little monkey had made last December but forgot to give me at Christmas time!
Never mind, it's the thought that counts, innit? :D

A word from our junior sponsor
Cavebaby was already up, dressed and ready for breakfast, and was messing about with the phone this morning as she was waiting for us to get up.
Cavebaby: Can I ring you, mama?
Me: You can talk to me, i'm right here.
Cavebaby: But can I ring your office phone?
Me: Yeah, but you do know I'm not there right now....
Cavebaby: [messmessmessmess ringringring buzzbuzzbuzz] don't know what it's doing, mama.
Capt Caveman (without specs on): Give it here. (hangs up the phone)
Cavebaby: But I didn't get to leave you a message..... Can I ring your mobile, mama? [messmessmessmess ringringring left the bedroom whisperwhisperwhisper]
Later, while I was waiting for the train, I thought I'd better check my phone messages in case any of my hardworking directors had left me a message overnight.
Answering service: You have one new message, please dial XXX.
Telephone message from Cavebaby: Hello, mama. I love you. You are the best mama in the whole world. See you later.
Me: *grin ear to ear*

What would you do?
Normally, I don't care very much what happens in the wider world and what other people are doing beyond the sphere of Goatville. However, this weekend just gone, Cavebaby and I watched some athletics from Turin (European Indoor Championships).
Whilst we were delighted to watch Mo Farah winning gold in the 3000m final, we were less enthused about that circus freak Dwain Chambers.

Mo Farah did not do very well at the Beijing Olympics. Afterwards, he searched out the best training camp and group he could find, and went off to give it another honest bash. He has returned this year with some ferocious speed endurance and an unrivalled will to win.
Compare and contrast with Dwain the circus freak. At the age of 23, he thought he was not progressing fast enough as a sprinter, so he sought out the best doping laboratory he could find (Victor Conte and Balco with their magic tee-aitch-gee). He doped for years and got away with it. It was only when the drug testing techniques got good enough that he was caught out. Of course he was banned from competition for 2 years, and then the Brits dug the knife in further by banning him from the Olympics for life. Also he has to pay back all his earnings from races he took part in while doping from future earnings from athletics, reputed to be more than £100,000.
So, now you have this circus freak guy who is now eligible for competition, unsuccessfully tried out for a different sport, shoots off his mouth about how athletes who don't do drugs can't win gold medals, criticizes his potential/ actual colleagues and whines on about being victimised as he is banned from the Olympics forever. Instead of saying sorry immediately, and volunteering to help with anti-doping efforts, he sat on his ass waiting for UK Athletics to approach him (as opposed to someone else who got caught like, say, David Millar who is also back in competition in cycling). Plus I can't help but wonder how much advantage Dwain is still carrying now because of the extra strength, training and stamina he gained from drug taking. Also I wonder if he had not been caught all those years ago, whether he would still be doping now.....
I also wondered how I would feel if a colleague of mine got promoted ahead of me not because of his/ her good work, but because they cheated. Or if I was still a student, and someone got better grades not because of their cleverness/ hard work, but because they cheated in the exams.
Would I be forgiving? Would I turn the other cheek?
What a shame - all this crap overshadows a great performance and win by the much more deserving and admirable Mo Farah.
Ah, I'm just carping.....
